In
a bid to woo the more than four million Indian Americans in the US ahead of the
November elections, Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, has appointed Sabrina Singh
as her press secretary.
The appointment
of the 32-year-old, Sabrina is seen as a move to counter the
reports that Kamala Harris has strong views about Kashmir and in favor of Pakistan. The reports could adversely
affect her chances in the coming elections. Sabrina Singh, through her twitter
handle, however confirmed that she was excited to join Harris. Indian Americans are one of the fastest
growing, wealthiest and most educated demographic groups in the US. They
constitute a strong vote bank in the US and naturally politicians work hard to
woo them.
Kamala Harris has strong views on Kashmir
but has refrained from taking a strident position on it so far. However, her
statement last year that Kashmiris are’ ’not
alone’’ and her Party was ‘’keeping track’’ on the situation, has been strongly
criticized in India. In January Sabrina Singh was
appointed national spokesperson for Michael Bloomberg’s Presidential campaign.
Millionaire Bloomberg, a three-term former mayor of New York City, had
announced his White House run last November as a Democratic aspirant. Coming
with a varied experience in politics Sabrina Singh also served as a regional
communications director for Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign in 2016.
Married to Mike Smith, Sabrina Singh comes from a family deep-rooted in
American politics. Her grandfather JJ Singh was the head of India
League of America, back in
the 1940s. Sabrina Singh’s family belonged to Abbottabad (now in Pakistan). The
family came to the US before partition in 1947.
