The
authorities of the United Nations Human Rights (UNHR) have expressed their
expressed concerns over the United States recent decision to impose sanctions
against some International Criminal Court (ICC) officials involved in
investigations into possible war crimes by US forces in Afghanistan.
The independence of the ICC and its
ability to operate without interference must be guaranteed so that it can
decide matters without any improper influence, threats or interference from any
quarter, Xinhua quoted UN High Commissioner for Human Rights spokesperson
Rupert Colville as saying on Friday. Colville stressed that victims of human
rights violations and serious violations of international humanitarian law and
their families have the right to redress and the truth.
In a statement issued on Thursday the
White House informed that US President Donald Trump has authorized economic
sanctions against ICC officials who are "directly engaged with any effort
to investigate or prosecute United States personnel without the consent of the
United States,". Apart from economic sanctions expansion of visa
restrictions against these officials and their family members was also
announced. The ICC had in March 2020 authorized an investigation into possible
war crimes in Afghanistan, including those that may have been committed by the
US military and the Central Intelligence Agency. The investigations could lead
to indictment of US military and intelligence personnel.
