Two militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) surrendered during an encounter that began after a siege and search operation in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

A police spokesman said that J&K Special Operations Group (SOG), Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel started a joint operation in Tongdaunu village in Kulgam early today. The security forces started a door-to-door search operation with the first light this morning, then the terrorists hiding there started firing at them. He said that the encounter started after the security forces responded.

The security forces identified the terrorists present there and brought their family members to the encounter site who appealed to them to surrender.

Security forces also assured the terrorists that if they surrendered they would not suffer any harm. Later, the two local terrorists of Lashkar surrendered with two pistols and ammunition and offensive materials.

Significantly, during the last few months, about 12 terrorists of various organizations have been allowed to surrender during encounters in the Kashmir Valley.
