The Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the only road connecting Union Territory of Ladakh to Kashmir Valley, has been closed again on Monday due to snowfall since last night.
Official sources told Univarta that Zojila Pass, Meenmarg, Sonmarg and Drass were snowing in the world's second coldest place after Siberia.
He said the highway was recently reopened to traffic after being closed for four days due to snowfall and slippery road.
Rain and snowfall are forecast on the highway during the next 72 hours. Due to which traffic will be affected.
He said traffic was suspended on the highway due to snowfall this morning. Drass, Meenmarg received a few inches of snow and about eight inches of snowfall was recorded at the Zojila pass. Due to which the road has become very slippery and there is danger of avalanche. After the snowfall stops, a campaign will be carried out to remove the snow.
Authorities in the Union Territory of Ladakh and Kashmir have decided to keep the highway open till the end of December if there is no heavy snowfall. However, the Border Roads Organization (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has already appointed machines and people for snow clearance operations.
The highway remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.
The central government has also started construction of a tunnel on the Zojila pass to continue the road facility in all seasons.
