Indian security agencies have found India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi getting targeted in some social media messages related to Pakistani intelligence. According to an assessment submitted to the government on Wednesday, the effort aims to generate anti-India sentiment on social media, especially in the Gulf countries. Also, to propagate that India is an Islamophobic country.
The report said that Pakistan is actually trying to bring scholarly relations between India and a close ally in the Gulf by attacking PM Modi, who has invested heavily to deepen India's relations with the Middle East. The assessment by North Block includes a long list of troll handles in Pakistan and Gulf countries that were being used to achieve this objective.
Social media messages targeting the country did not come for the first time. Security officials noted a similar pattern last year, when Jammu and Kashmir was placed under a communication lockdown last August. A Central Government official told Hindustan Times that what is new in this case, but in the past, the celebrities in Gulf countries have been used for this propaganda. On Tuesday, #ShameOnModi on Twitter was trended from #ChaosInIndia Pakistan a day earlier.
