Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday sought to remove any apprehensions about the farm sector reforms his government has launched, saying the laws are aimed at taking down the walls between agriculture and allied sectors, and bringing in more investment and help farmers in accessing new markets and technology.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to agriculture and said the reforms were part of the wider reform process to build bridges among different sectors of the economy.
Stressing that sectors need bridges and not walls, he said the reforms would take down the old barriers built around agriculture and allied industries such as food processing and cold storage.
"We'd seen walls between the agriculture sector and other areas associated with it - be it agriculture infrastructure, food processing, storage or cold chain. All walls and obstacles are being removed now," said the prime minister, addressing business chamber FICCI's 93rd annual general meeting and annual convention via video-conferencing
"After reforms, farmers will get new markets, options and more benefits of technology,' he added,
He also asked the private sector to do more for the sector. "The more support farmers get the better their produce will be," he said.
The prime minister's statement came as the standoff between the government and the farmers' protest against the recently passed farm laws that entered 17th day, with their unions threatening to block railways and highways.
Mr Modi also spoke about the economic recovery underway and said that foreign investors have done record investments in India in the last six years and everyone is working to strengthen the Atmanirbhar Bharat.
"Emphasis is being laid to re-energise technology-based industries in sectors in which India has a long term competitive advantage. "
The government has invested in an multimodal connectivity to make logistics sector more competitive, he said.
