Welcoming the decision of the government to cautiously start operations of inter state passenger trains, senior Congress leader P chidambaram on Monday said road transport and air transport should also be commenced in a phased manner.

In a series tweets, Chidambaram said that Opening road, rail and air services is the only way to commence economic and commercial activity.

''We welcome the decision of the government to cautiously start operations of inter state passenger trains. The same modest opening should be started with road transport and air transport. The only way economic and commercial activity can effectively begin, is to open road, rail and air services for passengers and goods,'' Chidambaram said.

Indian Railways on Sunday announced its decision to restart passenger trains in a phased manner from Tuesday.

Ticket bookings will be opened from 4 pm on Monday, with these to be sold only via the IRCTC website or mobile app.

Passenger services will start with 15 "special" trains (total of 30 journeys) departing from Delhi and connecting cities in Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Tripura.
