At least 8 persons died and hundreds taken ill and admitted in hospitals after gas leaked from the LG Polymers Chemical Plant located at RR Venkatapuram village on the outskirts of city on Thursday, Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Damodar Gowtam Sawang said.
Talking to reporters in Tadepalli, Mr Sawang said six people died, with two brought dead to hospitals after inhaling the Styrene gas, one died after he fell in the well and another due to injuries for the same reason.
The DGP said Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered an inquiry into the gas leak incident.
He said Police vehicles and 108 ambulances were pressed into service and evacuated the people from the village. Some had breathing problems and they were rushed to hospitals and given treatment, he added.
Mr Sawang said the situation was brought under control at 0530 hours after infusing Neutralizers.
